Touch of Homesick

My niece is a bit of a drama queen and frequently complains about feeling homesick when the family goes out of town to visit relatives or friends.

I have been away from the DC area (where I grew up) for several years now, and I have to admit that every once in a great while I feel a touch of homesickness. But I know in my heart that I do not live there anymore and there’s no “going home.” In fact, the house where I grew up was sold to another family within months of my high school graduation and the new people remodeled it. So that’s a closed chapter of my life.

Now it’s on to greater adventures, here in Nashville and beyond!

County Fair

Last week was the end of the big Williamson County Fair and this week is the start of the huge Wilson County Fair. I thought about going to the Williamson County Fair, but to be honest, it was way too hot for me to want to go stand in long lines and be surrounded by thousands of sweaty smelly people.

This weekend is much cooler and I’m planning on going all day tomorrow. If I bring my church bulletin with me I can save $2.00 off the admission price, which is a nice little benefit of being a christian.

Twilight DVD

All around town the Twilight DVD is running between $22 and $29, even though it was in theaters over 10 months ago. I kept thinking the price would come down to the $12 – $15 range at Wal Mart for most dvds, but I guess it was such a blockbuster hit that no one feels inclined to reduce the price if they can milk it a little longer at the higher price. I even checked Amazon for a better price, but no go.

One advantage to the Amazon web site is that they do list used dvds and used cds through resellers. I found a new Twilight dvd for $12 and the movie score on cd for under $20 together, including shipping. So all I had to do was wait 3 days for it arrive in the mail instead of driving to the local store and having the privilege of taking it home in hand.

Dinner with Wendy

My girlfriend, Wendy Carlyle, was so bummed out today after sending her kids back to their dad that I invited her to dinner and some girl talk. Wendy has two kids but their dad has custody of them during the school year and they come to visit Wendy on holidays and for two months each summer. So the summer vacation is over and they had to go back.

They are great kids – they seem really well adjusted, excellent manners, very lovable. I wonder if they will stay that way or if being in the public school system will corrupt them. Wendy worries that once they are under the influence of other kids and get peer pressure that they will pick up a lot of bad habits and bad language from the other kids. I’m afraid she’s right, but that’s why parenting kids when they are school age is still so important – you have to be ever vigilant.
